Low elements are activities that start at one foot off the ground and go up to twelve feet. It is also characterized by the safety mechanism called "spotting". The goals become more complex and the group begins to take larger risks. Some low elements are valuable for teaching teamwork and cooperation, while others are concerned with balance and concentration. All the elements help foster trust, respect, care, and concern for every person. A great challenge course will have a variety of each type of element for a balanced presentation of all the skills and confidence levels in the group. Learning in a group environment can be powerful when coupled with reflection and transference into daily living situations. Many of the elements can be designed for portable and indoor use.
Task: Walk across the moving suspended log by using peer support if needed. Objective: Most members receive a heightened sense of physical self and group support from this activity.
Task: Two group members depend on each other to traverse as far as possible along two progressively widening cables. Objectives: Exploring physical, mental or spiritual trust and dependence.
Task: Progress from one end of the jam to the other by maneuvering the suspended logs on the cable. This is usually a three person activity. Objective: Explore different problem solving techniques. Physically challenges group members.
Task: Traverse a single cable with the aid of a rope affixed at the opposite end of the cable. Objectives: Individuals learn to accept help and support with this physically demanding element.
Task: Two group members traverse on cables that create an "x" with the aid of their peer group. Objective: Allows creativity in problem solving Promotes trust and cohesion within the group.
Task: Two group members traverse on a cable towards each other with the aid of a moving rope. Objectives: Practice balance and gain awareness of cause and effect in a team situation with group support.
Task: Traverse, as a group, the length of several cables attached to trees/poles. Objective: Utilize individual differences. Develop patience in stressful experiences.
Task: Climb up a swiveling ladder. Objective: Challenges group members physically. Builds trust in group.
Task: Traverse along a triangular cable formation with the aid of a stationary length of rope. Objectives: Practice balance and self awareness skills with the support of the group.
Task: More from the 1st tire in a series to the last. Objectives: Promotes realistic goal setting, challenges individuals physically, and allows the group to support each other physically and emotionally.
Task: Pass each other in the group up and through the suspended tire. Objective: Achieve a higher level of support and trust from the group. Find group characteristics that have not yet surfaced. Heighten the sense of accomplishment and motivation.
Task: Get the entire group over a suspended horizontal beam. Objectives: Utilize individual differences. Develop problem solving abilities and group support.
Task: Lift the tire over the top of the pole, touch it to the ground and put it back over the top of the pole. Objectives: Emphasize the need for support and respect of the other group members. Bring out all the parts needed to make a whole.
Task: Get the whole group from one side of the spider's web to the other without upsetting the sleeping spider. Objectives: Review the group's ability to deal with potential success and failure.
Task: Fall backwards from a platform into the arms of the group. Objectives: Develop a greater sense of trust. Develop a sense of community within the group. Begin to deal with the effects of perceived risk.
Task: Get the whole group up and over the wall safely. Objective: Culminate the group development achieved throughout the other group initiatives. Develop a sense of potential for self actualization. Overcome the fear inherent with perceived risk.
